MusicThere has always been local musical tradition, ever since the days that music was played on a hollow log (the Tun) and some whistles made from palm fronds (Chirimio) At the present time you can find all kinds of music: from the drum and chirimia marches, the cofradia bands like those recorded in "The Sacred Teaching Songs of the Maya Tzutujil, a CD recorded by Discos Atitlan, a cooperative record label that grew up here in the early 80s. Besides the traditional music, you will find modern expressions of tzutujil music, like "Bohemario" from Juan Sisay's group "La Trova del Lago". At Discos Atitlán there have also been various Rock and modern jazz projects, like Roberto Luz (Mambo Balam, The Road to Paradise), Rene Zimzik's Rumba tropical (Los Zimzik), the percussion of Carlos Cush (Percush), the Tangos from Cristobal and Laura (Sur), and many more. In Santiago there is also childrens music. Discos Atitlan has produced two different CDs for children: "Cantemos", with Argentina Sojuel, and the CD from the Coro de Niños de Atitlán. You can find some of the Discos Atitlán catalog at our Tienda Santiago or on the web from DISCOS ATITLAN |
